Robson Resort Communities has been one of the biggest names in Arizona active adult living for more than 50 years. Beginning with Sun Lakes in 1972, Robson has developed several of the state's most recognizable 55+ communities.
Today, Robson communities stretch from the Phoenix metro area to Southern Arizona. Some are completely established and offer only resale homes, while others continue to offer brand-new construction.
Although these communities share many of the same characteristics—golf, pickleball, clubhouses, fitness centers, pools, clubs and an active social lifestyle—they can feel very different from one another.
Here is how I would rank the best Robson communities in Arizona, taking into consideration location, amenities, housing options, overall lifestyle and appeal to today's 55+ buyer.
Rank | Community | Location | New Homes? | Golf | Best For |
1 | PebbleCreek | Goodyear | Yes | Yes | Best overall |
2 | SaddleBrooke Communities | North Tucson | Yes/Resale | Yes | Amenities & mountain scenery |
3 | Sun Lakes | Chandler | No | Yes | Location & variety |
4 | SunBird | Chandler | No | Yes | Smaller community & value |
5 | SaddleBrooke Ranch | Oracle | Yes | Yes | Newer luxury community |
6 | Quail Creek | Green Valley | Yes | Yes | Southern Arizona lifestyle |
7 | Robson Ranch Arizona | Eloy | Yes | Yes | New construction & value |
1. PebbleCreek – Goodyear, Arizona
Best overall Robson community in Arizona
If I had to choose one Robson community that offers the best overall combination of location, amenities, housing and lifestyle, PebbleCreek would be my #1 choice.
Located in Goodyear in the West Valley, PebbleCreek has developed into one of the premier 55+ communities in the entire Phoenix metropolitan area.
One of its biggest strengths is the sheer number of amenities available to residents. PebbleCreek offers 54 holes of championship golf, large clubhouses, fitness facilities, swimming pools, pickleball and tennis courts, restaurants, creative arts facilities, entertainment venues and an enormous selection of clubs and organized activities.
The community also has an impressive pickleball setup, which has become increasingly important as pickleball has grown into one of the most popular activities in Arizona's active adult communities.
Another major advantage is location.
Goodyear has grown tremendously in recent years. PebbleCreek residents have convenient access to shopping, restaurants, healthcare and entertainment without having to give up the resort atmosphere inside the community.
PebbleCreek also offers something many of Arizona's older active adult communities cannot: both new construction and resale homes.
That gives buyers a wide range of choices. You can purchase an established resale home in a mature portion of the community or select a newer Robson home with a more contemporary floor plan.
Why PebbleCreek ranks #1: It checks almost every box. Excellent amenities, golf, pickleball, a strong location, a large and active resident population, resale inventory and new construction make PebbleCreek one of the most complete 55+ communities in Arizona.
2. The SaddleBrooke Communities – North Tucson, Arizona
Best for mountain views, golf and a massive selection of amenities
SaddleBrooke is a little different from the other communities on this list because buyers will commonly hear several SaddleBrooke names.
The easiest way to understand the area is to think of it as three interconnected active adult communities: SaddleBrooke One, SaddleBrooke TWO and The Preserve at SaddleBrooke.
Each has its own characteristics, amenities and housing options, but collectively they create the larger SaddleBrooke lifestyle.
This is important for prospective buyers because choosing SaddleBrooke isn't necessarily about choosing one small neighborhood. You're entering a large active adult area with an enormous variety of recreational and social opportunities.
The original SaddleBrooke community began development in the late 1980s and has since grown into one of Southern Arizona's premier active adult destinations.
Golf is one of the biggest attractions. Across the SaddleBrooke communities, residents have access to extensive golf options along with pickleball, tennis, fitness facilities, swimming pools, restaurants, clubhouses, clubs and social activities.
Then there is the scenery.
SaddleBrooke sits near the Santa Catalina Mountains north of Tucson, giving many parts of the community spectacular mountain and desert views. It has a distinctly different atmosphere from most Phoenix-area active adult communities.
The Preserve at SaddleBrooke
The Preserve represents the more upscale and newer portion of the SaddleBrooke experience.
Homes tend to be larger, with premium homesites and impressive views. For buyers looking for a higher-end Robson home while still wanting access to the broader SaddleBrooke lifestyle, The Preserve can be particularly attractive.
This also means SaddleBrooke offers an unusually broad range of housing. Buyers can consider older resale homes in established neighborhoods or newer and more luxurious properties within The Preserve.
Why SaddleBrooke ranks #2: The combination of mountain scenery, golf, amenities and housing variety is difficult to match. Its primary disadvantage compared with PebbleCreek is simply location for buyers who specifically want to live in the Phoenix metropolitan area.
3. Sun Lakes – Chandler, Arizona
Best for location, housing variety and an established community
Sun Lakes is where the Robson story began.
Development started in 1972, and Sun Lakes eventually grew into one of Arizona's largest and best-known active adult communities.
One of Sun Lakes' greatest strengths is its Chandler location.
Unlike many 55+ communities that require buyers to move toward the outskirts of the Phoenix metropolitan area, Sun Lakes provides an established active adult lifestyle while remaining close to the restaurants, shopping, healthcare and entertainment available throughout Chandler and the Southeast Valley.
The community itself is enormous and is divided into several neighborhoods and country clubs.
Residents have access to five golf courses and five country clubs, along with swimming pools, fitness facilities, pickleball, tennis, restaurants and numerous clubs and social activities.
Because Sun Lakes was developed over several decades, housing is extremely diverse.
Buyers can find smaller and relatively affordable older homes, extensively remodeled properties, golf course homes and larger luxury residences.
Sun Lakes is completely established, so buyers looking here will primarily be shopping for resale homes rather than building new.
For many buyers, that isn't a disadvantage. Mature landscaping, established amenities and the surrounding Chandler location can outweigh the benefits of purchasing new construction farther outside the city.
Why Sun Lakes ranks #3: It offers one of the best locations of any Robson community in Arizona and an enormous variety of homes and amenities. Its biggest drawback is simply that buyers looking specifically for a brand-new home will need to look elsewhere.
4. SunBird – Chandler, Arizona
Best for a smaller community and potentially better value
SunBird is another established Robson community in Chandler, but it provides a noticeably different experience from neighboring Sun Lakes.
With roughly 1,600 homes, SunBird is much smaller.
That can be an advantage for buyers who want an active adult lifestyle without living in a community containing many thousands of homes.
At the center of SunBird is an 18-hole executive golf course along with a large clubhouse and numerous recreational and social amenities.
Residents can enjoy swimming, fitness activities, sports, clubs and organized events while remaining close to everything available throughout Chandler and the Southeast Valley.
The location is arguably one of SunBird's greatest strengths.
Like Sun Lakes, residents don't have to sacrifice access to the rest of metropolitan Phoenix to live in an age-restricted community.
SunBird is also completely built out, meaning buyers will be purchasing resale homes. Depending on the property and market conditions, it can provide an interesting value alternative to some of Arizona's more expensive resort communities.
Why SunBird ranks #4: It combines an excellent Chandler location with a smaller community atmosphere and golf. Buyers who don't need the enormous amenity packages offered by PebbleCreek or SaddleBrooke may actually prefer its smaller scale.
5. SaddleBrooke Ranch – Oracle, Arizona
Best for newer luxury homes and resort amenities
SaddleBrooke Ranch is located north of Tucson near Oracle and is one of Robson's newer active adult developments.
Despite sharing the SaddleBrooke name, SaddleBrooke Ranch is a separate community from SaddleBrooke, SaddleBrooke TWO and The Preserve.
It offers a newer and more contemporary interpretation of the Robson resort lifestyle.
The community includes championship golf, pickleball, tennis, indoor and outdoor swimming, fitness facilities, restaurants, walking trails and numerous clubs and activities.
SaddleBrooke Ranch is particularly well known for pickleball and has developed an extensive complex for residents.
The surrounding landscape is another major selling point. Mountain and desert views help give SaddleBrooke Ranch a scenic resort atmosphere that is difficult to replicate in many Phoenix-area communities.
New construction also remains an important part of the community.
Why consider SaddleBrooke Ranch? Buyers looking for newer construction, extensive amenities and Southern Arizona scenery should have SaddleBrooke Ranch high on their list.
6. Quail Creek – Green Valley, Arizona
Best for the Southern Arizona resort lifestyle
Quail Creek is located in Green Valley, south of Tucson, and offers another impressive Robson resort experience.
The community features 27 holes of championship golf, a large clubhouse, restaurants, fitness facilities, swimming pools, pickleball and extensive recreational facilities.
One particularly interesting feature is its Creative Arts & Technology Center, which provides dedicated facilities for residents interested in hobbies, crafts and creative pursuits.
The location also distinguishes Quail Creek from Robson's Phoenix communities.
Green Valley has long been a popular retirement destination, and the surrounding Santa Rita Mountains provide a beautiful Southern Arizona backdrop.
New construction remains available in Quail Creek, while buyers can also consider resale homes throughout the community.
Why consider Quail Creek? It offers a great balance of resort amenities, golf, new construction and the quieter Southern Arizona lifestyle.
7. Robson Ranch Arizona – Eloy, Arizona
Best for new construction and value
Robson Ranch Arizona is located in Eloy, roughly between the Phoenix and Tucson metropolitan areas.
The location creates an interesting tradeoff.
Buyers are farther from the restaurants, shopping and entertainment available in the core Phoenix suburbs, but that distance can also translate into more home and amenities for the money.
Robson Ranch Arizona offers championship golf, pickleball, swimming, fitness facilities, restaurants, a dog park and an extensive clubhouse and social environment.
The community also continues to offer new construction, making it particularly attractive to buyers who want a newer home but don't necessarily want the prices associated with some of the more centrally located active adult communities.
For retirees who don't need to commute and don't mind being farther outside the Phoenix metro area, Robson Ranch Arizona can offer an impressive resort lifestyle.
Why consider Robson Ranch Arizona? Buyers willing to trade location for value can get newer homes and extensive resort amenities at a potentially more approachable price point.
Comparing the Best Robson Communities in Arizona
There isn't one community that will be best for every buyer, but there are some clear standouts depending on your priorities.
For the best overall combination of amenities, location and housing options, I would choose PebbleCreek.
For mountain scenery and golf, the combined SaddleBrooke communities are difficult to beat.
For buyers who prioritize being close to the amenities of the Phoenix metropolitan area, Sun Lakes is one of the strongest options.
And for someone who likes the Chandler location but prefers a smaller active adult community, SunBird deserves consideration.
Buyers specifically interested in newer construction should also compare PebbleCreek, SaddleBrooke Ranch, Quail Creek, Robson Ranch Arizona and The Preserve at SaddleBrooke.
Which Robson Community Is Right for You?
When comparing Arizona's Robson communities, don't make the decision based entirely on the home.
The community itself will likely have just as much impact on your lifestyle.
I recommend comparing:
Location and proximity to family
Home prices
HOA fees
Golf options and costs
Pickleball and other recreational facilities
Restaurants and clubhouses
Healthcare access
Distance to airports
New construction versus resale homes
Community size
Clubs and social activities
Overall atmosphere
Two communities can look very similar online and feel completely different once you actually spend time inside them.
Final Thoughts
Robson has been developing active adult communities in Arizona since the 1970s, and its communities represent several very different versions of Arizona retirement living.
PebbleCreek stands out as my top overall Robson community because of its combination of amenities, location, golf, housing choices and the continued availability of new construction.
The SaddleBrooke communities offer an entirely different experience centered around Southern Arizona's mountain scenery and an enormous collection of amenities.
Sun Lakes and SunBird are particularly appealing for buyers who want an established 55+ community while remaining in the Chandler and Southeast Valley area.
Meanwhile, SaddleBrooke Ranch, Quail Creek and Robson Ranch Arizona provide additional options for buyers interested in newer homes and resort-style living outside the core Phoenix metropolitan area.
Ultimately, the best Robson community depends on what you want your retirement lifestyle to look like.
If you're considering moving to an Arizona 55+ community, I can help you compare Robson communities with other active adult communities throughout the state and narrow down the communities that best fit your budget, preferred location and lifestyle.
